Handling a catamaran requires a different set of skills compared to a monohull: twin engines, a wider beam, and crew management in spaces that change everything.

Over the course of a weekend, we will sail on a dedicated catamaran, focusing on port maneuvers, anchoring in the bay, and sailing dynamics: minimal theory, maximum practice, with a certified instructor always on board.

At the end of the course, a final assessment is provided: our instructors give each participant personalized feedback on the skills acquired and suggest the best path for continued growth.

  • Departure: Marina di Nettuno
  • Level: Basic nautical experience recommended
  • Certification: Final assessment included
Recommended age: Target Age: 25–50 years

What our guests say

Course Syllabus & Route

This advanced course is designed to help you stop worrying about those high-pressure situations that can be intimidating when you take the helm of a catamaran.

Feel more confident and eliminate the stress of mooring. Our Catamaran Training is now open for enrollment—we look forward to seeing you on board!

1 Weekend (3 Days / 2 Nights)

  • IMBARCO

Check-in: Friday from 5:00 PM (or Saturday by 8:30 AM) — Marina di Nettuno (RM). Cabin assignment, instructor briefing, and initial crew meeting.

  • SBARCO

Check-out: Sunday by 6:00 PM — Marina di Nettuno (or Port of Ostia, depending on the itinerary).

  • Welcome on Board & First Crew Meeting

    Friday

The course officially begins in the harbor immediately after check-in and settling on board with a collective hull inspection and the first crew briefing. During this phase, the instructor explains the technical “catamaran philosophy,” assigns operational roles, and addresses the participants’ initial technical questions. The evening continues with a convivial dinner on board or ashore before spending the night moored in port, ready to set sail the following morning.

  • Mooring Maneuvers and Navigation

    Saturday

The most intensive day of the weekend starts early with harbor maneuvers focused on twin-engine approaches, dockside management, and the use of springs and lines. Afterward, we will set sail toward the nearest bays to test anchoring techniques under real-world conditions. In the afternoon, we dedicate ourselves to pure sailing, studying multihull trim, sail management on a wide beam, tacking, and gybing, with the instructor alternating between technical demonstrations and direct practice to ensure every participant takes the helm.

  • Skill Consolidation and Final Assessment

    Sunday

Sunday morning is dedicated to consolidating the skills acquired by repeating the most critical maneuvers with increasing operational autonomy. The instructor observes and corrects movements, leaving plenty of room for those who want to test themselves in more complex situations. In the afternoon, we return to port for disembarkation and an individual final assessment, where each participant receives direct feedback on the skills achieved and personalized advice on the best path to continue their nautical growth.

    FAQ

Is this course suitable for beginners?

No: The Catamaran Course requires a solid foundation in monohull sailing. If you are just starting out, we recommend beginning with our Basic Sailing Course or Skipper Training. You can then return to the catamaran with the right skills to truly get the most out of this program.

Do I need a nautical license?

No, a license is not mandatory to participate. The course has its own educational value and takes place in waters where a license is not required. If you are planning to obtain one, ask us how to integrate this course into your certification path.

    What should I bring?

A soft duffel bag (no hard suitcases), a sweatshirt for the evening, swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, a snorkeling mask, and shoes with non-marking light-colored soles. Please bring any personal medications you may need.

How does the “Kitty” (shared kitty/common fund) work?

The Common Fund is a shared pool of money managed by the crew for the galley (food/drinks), fuel, and any port fees. The skipper is traditionally excluded from these costs. The final amount varies based on the group’s choices and consumption.

How many people are on each boat?

The course takes place on a single catamaran with a group of 6 to 10 participants. This small group size ensures that everyone gets significant hands-on time at the helm and individual attention from the instructor.

    What if I get seasick?

It happens: we are here to help with practical advice (nutrition, positioning on board, timing). If you know you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend bringing a personal remedy you have already tested.

How does the final assessment work?

The instructor monitors each participant throughout the entire weekend, focusing on harbor maneuvers, anchoring, sailing dynamics, and crew cooperation. On Sunday afternoon, before disembarkation, every participant receives individual feedback on the skills they’ve mastered and personalized advice on the best next step for their sailing journey.

Can I participate if I want to become a Co-Skipper for your flotillas?

Yes, the Catamaran Course is one of the recommended paths for those aiming to join the DS Team as a Co-Skipper during our summer flotillas. If this is your goal, please contact us before enrolling: we will help you map out the full training path.

How do the extra costs work?

The galley (food and drinks), fuel, and final cleaning are shared among all participants. Based on our experience, the extra cost is approximately €20–€30 per person—one of the lowest compared to our other courses. Please note that the skipper is exempt from galley costs.
